I’m very, very happy to see this site. The question of free speech, political awareness, scrutiny of government and democratic process must unfold on many fronts. The discourse of the Legislature, within which the issue of Tom Christy’s Legislative Journal has been debated, is inadequate to confront and disclose the breadth and depth of the real problem here.
Most Niagara County citizens seem to have become passive, unconscious and thus reactive if not indifferent with respect to the serious problems of our communities. Politicians have failed to encourage their participation. The “factionaries” of the political factions are more often obstructive rather than facilitative of the openness of the public sphere of creativity, self-expression and community action. The factional party partisans are not interested in education for democracy—democracy in the broadest cultural sense as the ethos of self-formation, self-fulfillment and self-determination.
Their “discourse” which should be an “intercourse” betrays a Sophistic manipulativeness not interested in truth and justice but in coercive political force masked as legitimate power. What I saw in the county Legislature meeting the week before last was a display of disingenuous distortion of truth and suppression of the facts of the matter. It was civic violence masked as a concern for authority and legality. Apparently the Legislature for the most part cannot stomach critical inquiry and questioning. They seem to have a managerial model of government that wishes to bureaucratize the public sphere and democratic process.
The schools have failed to democratize intelligence and inculcate political consciousness as a necessary faculty of social existence. The people must educate themselves with all the resources encompassing the entire spectrum from Art to Action and beyond.
Niagara County has a lot of work to do. Thanks for your efforts.
